Purpose

To fund travel and registration to attend and possibly present a paper or a poster at an IMS sponsored or co-sponsored meeting. Presentation of a paper/poster is encouraged, but not required.

Eligibility

The travel awards are available to IMS members who are graduate students (seeking a Masters or Ph.D. degree) studying some area of statistical science or probability who have not yet received a PhD degree. Applicants must be members of IMS, though joining at the time of application is allowed.

New Researchers looking for travel funds should apply for the IMS ​New Researcher Travel Award.

Amount

Grants per award are typically between USD 400 and USD 1000. The actual amount of an award depends on the travel distance to the place of the meeting and quality of applications. Grants will be reimbursed against receipts and may be combined with other sources of funding.

Eligible Meetings

Funds can be requested for any IMS Sponsored or Co-Sponsored Meeting.  All IMS Sponsored and Co-Sponsored Meetings are indicated on this page: http://www.imstat.org/meetings-calendar/.

Application Process

All applicants should submit a paper/poster and register to the meeting directly with the meeting. This award application and the meeting abstract submission/registration are separate.

1. Application Packet – Send the following via email as one PDF file to erg@imstat.org include subject line HANNAN AWARD: <last name of applicant>. Items can be sent as pdf, ps or plain text attachments.

  • Cover letter. Include in the letter the following:
    • Contact information, including email.
    • The IMS Sponsored or Co-Sponsored Meeting for which you are asking for travel funds.
    • Your expected date of graduation.
  • A recent CV.
  • If submitting a poster or paper to the meeting, please include an abstract and the full paper, if available.

2. Letter of Recommendation – One letter should be sent directly by recommender to erg@imstat.org using HANNAN AWARD: <last name of applicant> in the subject line.

3. IMS Membership – Be sure you are currently a member of the IMS. You can join here. Student membership is FREE.

Deadline

All applications must be received by February 1.

Additional Information

Applications will be reviewed by the IMS Committee on Travel Awards, and applicants will be notified in late April. A paper or poster must be the work of the student, although it may be have been done in collaboration with an advisor or others.

About James Hannan

Professor Hannan was a Fellow of the IMS. He received a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953 (with research in compound decision theory under Herbert Robbins), and was a faculty member in Mathematics and Statistics at Michigan State University from 1953 until 2002.
